Periodontal Splinting (Support for Loose Teeth) in Gurugram

A periodontal splint joins loose (mobile) teeth to support them. In selected stage IV periodontitis, a complex gum-disease classification, when loose teeth affect comfort or function, a splint may be considered for comfort or function while gum disease is treated. Evidence is very uncertain; splinting does not restore lost bone, cure gum disease or promise that teeth will be saved. Dr. Supreet Kaur Sawhney, MDS, is a Senior Consultant – Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon and Senior Implantologist with more than 20 years of experience. A Gurugram assessment can explain whether this limited option fits the tooth and gum findings.

What splinting may and may not do

A temporary splint may be used for comfort in selected stage IV cases during periodontal treatment. After successful periodontal therapy, longer-term splinting may be considered for persistent or increasing mobility in selected cases when tooth replacement is not needed. Both recommendations have very low-certainty evidence and focus on comfort, not tooth survival.

A splint does not control the underlying inflammation. It is an aid to comfort and function while the periodontal condition is managed; it does not regenerate supporting bone or guarantee that tooth movement will stop. Continued periodontal treatment and review remain essential.

Review and daily care

A selected splint needs ongoing assessment of gum health, tooth movement and comfort. Daily brushing and cleaning between teeth, using a technique tailored to the person, help control plaque (soft buildup on teeth); gum reviews remain important. The team can review whether the support remains useful and whether the treatment plan has changed. The evidence does not establish a particular splint material, design or lifespan.

This is different from a sports mouthguard or a splint for an accidental dental injury. A removable occlusal splint therapy guide explains a different jaw-appliance purpose. Here the discussion concerns selected stage IV periodontitis and loose teeth affecting comfort or function.
