Block Bone Grafting in Gurugram

For a selected localized jaw-ridge defect, a block graft may use a shaped piece of the patient’s own bone (autogenous bone). This is different from adding small particles alone, and it is not the right method for every defect. The question is whether this approach fits the site, what the donor source would be and how implant timing relates to healing. Dr. Supreet Kaur Sawhney, MDS, is a Senior Consultant – Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon and Senior Implantologist with 20+ years of experience. A consultation can clarify the reason for the proposed graft and other options.

How a block graft differs from graft particles

Disease, trauma or developmental differences can leave inadequate bone for a planned implant. For localized ridge augmentation, the ITI consensus lists blocks of the patient’s own bone, small particles of graft material and membranes as options selected according to defect complexity and material properties. It does not establish that blocks are always better. A membrane is a protective barrier used in some grafting approaches.

Ask where the proposed bone would come from and what material or membrane products would be used. When the plan uses the patient’s own bone, ask which area it would come from and what effects may occur there. Pain, bruising, swelling and infection are possible with grafting; risk differs by donor and recipient area. Implant-site grafting can also involve infection, graft material visible through the gum (exposure) or insufficient new bone; relevance varies by technique and patient. Human, animal-derived or synthetic products may also be discussed, with choice depending on site, amount and preference.

Timing and what healing can achieve

The amount of bone needed and site anatomy help determine the graft method and whether implant placement may be considered at the same time or after a separate healing stage. Imaging, defect shape, implant position, tissue health and preferences need individual review. A healed graft may still leave too little bone for the intended implant, so further augmentation may be needed.

A general graft procedure may use local anaesthetic (medicine that numbs the area); sedation (medicine to help you relax) may be added if planned. Exact steps depend on the selected method. Medical conditions, medicines and smoking should also be reviewed. Early instructions may include soft foods and avoiding disturbance of the operated area; follow the treating team’s own site plan. Contact them if pain, swelling or drainage worsens.

Compare reconstruction with other options

Ask why a shaped block is proposed, whether it would come from your own bone, what donor area and effects to discuss, whether small particles or a protective membrane are being considered, and whether implant placement is planned with the graft or after a separate healing stage. You can also ask which other restoration or implant plans fit the site.
